The Herdwick Inn is the only so named pub in The Lake District: an area synonymous with the rugged and sturdy Herdwick Sheep.

Located in the small, friendly village of Penruddock, the pub is situated just off the A66 between the Ancient Market town of Penrith and Keswick on the shores of Derwent Water. Only 6 miles from Lake Ullswater and 12 Miles from Derwent water, this is a perfect base for all kinds of water-based and walking activities. We also boast excellent transport links to the nearby towns as well as some of the Lake District’s most famous peeks.

Our Story

The pub was recently taken over by local chef, Chris Isles and his partner Chloe. The couple have run two successful pubs in the area with Chloe front of house and Chris doing what he does best and focusing on producing some of the finest food in the area. Despite only taking over in August, the couple have big plans for the place and can’t wait to share them with you all.

The Historic Market town of Penrith is just 5 miles East of Penruddock with its castle, museum visitor’s centre and many independent shops as well as a traditional arcade and independent cinema there is something for all.

Keswick is just 11 miles by car or a bus ride away also has many shopping opportunities. It also boasts its own theatre on the shores of Derwent water as well as several visitor attractions, including the famous pencil factory with the World’s largest pencil and a house of illusions.

Only 2 miles east of us is The Reghed discovery centre. It was so named after the ancient Cumbrian King, Reghed. The centre has an Imax cinema, children’s play areas, independent shops and cafés and often hosts interactive travelling exhibitions.

Nearby Dalemain Manor House and Ancient Gardens is well worth a visit as well as Aira force waterfall and walk which are just 6 miles away.

We really are the gateway to the Lake District here at The Herdwick.
